Boardman Park hosted its annual Father-Daughter dance at the Larricia Family Community Center Feb. 15. The park has been offering this dance to fathers and their daughters, aged 5-12, for 10 years.
“This event started 10 years ago as a recreational program that kind of gave dads a chance to ‘date’ their daughters,” said Karen McCallum of the Boardman Park. “It gives the daughters a chance to see how they should be treated by men as they get older – just the way their dads treat them tonight, complete with corsages and flowers.”
At the dance, each couple gets their photo taken professionally. The daughters have the opportunity to dress up in Prom-like gowns, some even getting their hair and make up done professionally before the event. There are also many different places for photos throughout the center and plenty of staff on hand just to take pictures.
“The first year we did this event only one night, but now it has moved into a three-night event and we have sold out all three nights,” said McCallum. “People just love this event. Each dad can bring multiple daughters as long as they are within the age range.”
The dance includes dinner, as well as a rose ceremony and dancing. All proceeds from the dance go back to Boardman Park programs.
